Great info Barb S.

Just wanted to add that Make MKV at http://makemkv.com/ works for those DVD's (newest Beachbodys) that have tough copy protection (have had some that won't work with Freemake). Currently in free beta. But works great for me when needed. It makes a really large file/files totaling a few gigabytes, so you need some hard drive space available. Then use Freemake afterwards to convert/make smaller. Then delete the large files.

And of course this should only be used for personal use/backup.

I think I used the free HD Decrypter from DVDFab for a Beachbody workout successfully. Unlike their other free trials, the Decrypter never expires.

One other thing about Freemake Video converter,
sometimes you have to try more than once to open the dvd's titles.
(good thing I'm stubborn and kept trying LOL)

Barb, thanks so much for the tips; I will have to give it another shot when I have time to look at it more closely!

If you only have 4.5gb DVD blanks and the original DVD size is bigger than 4.5gb, you need to shrink the ripped DVD.

DVDShrink

Use DVDShrink to make a DVD larger than 4.5gb fit on a 4.5gb DVD

Okay, this is officially driving me crazy!

I am using Freemake. I FINALLY figured out how to cut the selection (I was cutting what I wanted to keep rather than getting rid of what I DIDN'T want--grrr!). So, I got the selection I want from the DVD and was all set to convert. The process seemed to go without a hitch, but when I went to play back the video, it was blank (black). I've tried this several times, including converting to different formats. If I converted an entire DVD (i.e., without cutting), this works, but it takes forever, and it really defeats the purpose of what I'm trying to do.

Any ideas about what I am doing wrong???

So you are trying to rip and trim just one title chapter then converting it to store?
Maybe try doing it in two separate steps
(1) ripping and converting
(2) then trimming the ripped converted file?

you can email their customer support too
support@freemake.com

Barb, I think I understand what you are suggesting--in fact, that is what I wound up doing with Erich's BY, as I trimmed down the entire selection that I had ripped as you had suggested above. So, I guess I could continue doing it this way, but it seems very cumbersome, as it takes a long time to rip an entire DVD.

I just downloaded Handbrake and am going to see if I have better luck with that...

I prefer taking the time to trim rather than wasting space on the hard drive or a dvdr.
Remember to delete the files you no longer need!

I don't mind taking the time to trim--I agree that I don't want to save the larger file on my hard drive--but the part that seems wasteful is downloading the WHOLE DVD instead of just the part that I need.

However, the good news is that I tried Handbrake, and this worked much better! I was able to easily rip just one chapter from Yoga in the Garden of Serenity with no problems.

Now I need to try with some other DVDs and/or coping to new DVDs, but at least I've made a start.

I just did what I believe you were trying to do??
maybe some of my walkthru will help

Put a dvd in the drive
opened Freemake Video converter
chose *DVD*
chose the Video VTS title I wanted to rip and trim
trimmed the video, clicked OK
played the trimmed video to ensure it was what I wanted
converted the video to wmv

and now have a video stored on my hard drive of the ripped and trimmed title which automatically plays on Windows Media Player.
I had selected a title that was 40 minutes long
trimmed it to 13 minutes and it took Freemake 6 minutes to convert the file
