I've been spending more too. I just dread going to the grocery store these days and when I do go I load up on things so I don't have to go back any time soon. I've also noticed some items are scarce so when I see them I'll buy extra. Like chicken broth, for example. It's scarce in the stores and I use it often so I load up on it when I go. Milk too. We've been drinking a lot more coffee and therefore consume more milk. Coffee feels like the only game in town some days .

"Has anyone been spending more on food lately?"

Yes. And obsessively writing expiration dates on everything. And fretting about proper storage.

I'm definitely spending more. I detest shopping at Shop Rite anyway, as the prices are way too high normally, and it's always crowded. Shop Rite, to me, was the Kohl's of supermarkets -- only budget friendly if you had the time and patience (couponing, only shopping on sales or clearance, etc.). I'm a Stop N Shop girl, which is better for me. But even there, I have found that the prices have been going up and up. However, I'm spending less on the following:
  • Going out to eat - we would eat Chipotle or Qdoba once a week as a family. That has been cut out. Big Bubble would also eat out for lunch/coffee every day for work. Now that he's teleworking most of the week, he doesn't spend the extra money on lunch.
  • Tutoring - Well, no tutoring for Tiny Bubble at all.
  • Before/After school care - not spending on that.
  • Gas - teleworking, so not spending the extra money on gas/maintenance.
  • Mall trips - Tiny Bubble and I would mall hop, go out for ice cream, and maybe lunch. I cannot remember the last time we did that, though I miss it.

So, I guess it's evening out. I'm actually probably spending less overall. But that grocery bill that stares me in the face every week. Like everyone else, when I see something that I would normally wait to buy, if I know I will use it I will buy it. I don't know when it will be back in stock.

Prices have definitely gone up. My husband loves flavored seltzer, and now even the store brand is a few dollars more a case.

Don't fret about those "expiration dates". They're mainly suggestions for rotating stock on store shelves and have zero to do with whether food is safe to eat.

You guys should get a soda stream. I don't have one, but it might be a good fit for your husband.

We have wondered about that. I will look into that. I think he didn't want to deal with the cartridges, etc. Thank you.

I’ve been spending next to nothing on food. I’m mostly eating cereal and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

If it was just me, that's probably what I would do too. That wouldn't fly with the rest of the family though.

I on average spend $ 500 to 600 a week on groceries and takeout, this includes cleaning supplies and toilet paper etc. It's definitely less now. We are a family of 4. My kids are eating less as they aren't as active. My son is usually on the ice everyday, twice a day twice a week, and my daughter usually trains 18 hours a week. My husband usually is on the ice 3 to 4 times a week. With that cut, they are eating and snacking less.. So saving me. Groceries are more expensive in Canada. I'm shocked when I go home to N.Y. and see how cheap groceries are!! I just bought a small flank steak, enough for a dinner for 4 and it was $34 and a pack of 16 boneless\skinless chicken thighs cost me $29. So groceries will definitely add up, especially I'd you buy extra to freeze or stock the pantry. I have not noticed a price increase since covid. Much less expensive back home. .. But I'm very happy living here and raising my kids here, so worth it.
