How much do you drink in a day? (fluids, not alcohol)

I'm wondering how much people who exercise drink each day? I drink so much and am wondering if it's excessive. My doctor recommended I cut way back to an amount I don't think is reasonable - especially for someone who works out.

ETA: This doctor also recommended bananas(!?) as a good source of protein.

TIA!

Hmmm how much did he say?

And I drink more when my exercise is more vigorous, but generally it stays at the 8-10 glasses range of total fluids.

She wants me to keep it to one liter a day. My sodium levels are very low and she said I'm drinking too much (I agree), but I think one liter is way too low. I didn't like her and don't trust anything she said, but I was wondering how much others are drinking.

Wow that would be about half of what I drink.

What is your plan? I would have to gradually lower if I needed to do that.

How much do you drink now, do you think?

There are some days here and there where I only drink 60-65 ounces but most days it is much more. I was reading about hydration recently and found that you can count most beverages toward it, not just water. I was already counting my chamomile/herbal teas but after reading that I started adding my coffee, caffeinated teas and if I drink chocolate milk. I don't count pop on the occasions I drink any. Most days my total is around 90-120 ounces. People tell me I drink too much but I don't force it, I drink bc I am thirsty.

ETA: I just had to look up a liter...that's only 35 ounces??? If I drink less than around 48 I get migraines.

Bananas are a great source of potassium but not protein. I would question anything this doctor says.

I plan to gradually lower, but not that drastically! I'm embarrassed to say how much I drink - it's a lot! I'm always so thirsty.

Yes, I am counting pop and all beverages. I couldn't handle only one liter a day! That is way too severe for me.

Absolutely. I was shocked when she said it. It's also on my patient summary under the "plan" - to increase protein levels (I already get plenty of protein) with foods like bananas, nuts (I can't eat nuts and told her that), and protein bars (which I already eat). The whole visit was bizarre and a total waste of time and money.

The banana comment shredded her credibility for me.

You might need to give your kidneys a break if you're drinking too much. My FIL was drinking coffee and water all day (diabetic) and had to reduce liquid intake for the sake of his kidneys.

But I would definitely have to get a second opinion.

I was really upset about the banana recommendation. She mentioned it twice and put it in writing. I told DH that I'll pay the bill in bananas. She also blamed my low sodium levels on not getting enough protein due to being a vegetarian. I told her I get plenty of protein, but she was so focused on that in addition to how much I drink (which is valid). The connection of low sodium levels with not eating meat makes no sense.

Well, this isn't a confessional

I feel like if it were me, I would say ok, one thing I need to do I learned. It is gonna work to help you acknowledge to reduce your liquid intake to take it easy on your kidneys. My amount is everything that I drink.

See what you can do to baby those lil bean shaped guys

ETA: They do sell dry mouth sprays at health food stores that you might want to try to keep yourself from drinking too much.
