I just keep my inventory on a word processing document. The first part is all VHS, but I only have about 25 of those anyway. The second section is DVD's sorted by instructor, and the the third is for DVD's that were part of a series (10-Minute Solution, Biggest Loser, the Firm, etc.). They're in regular print like this is I HAVE done them, and italicized if I haven't. I do list their playing times and year of release, though it does get complicated when there are multiple workouts on one DVD.

I try to update it weekly on my day off work, but since I've tried to limit myself to no more than one workout DVD purchase per paycheck--and I only get paid once every two weeks--I'm mostly updating the done/not done part, not adding new DVD's. In general, I figured I'd better keep an inventory so that I don't accidentally buy something I already own.

i have an excel spreadsheet that has columns for category, instructor, name of workout and dates done. One of the columns automatically calculates the last time I did the workout. I also add the length of the workout and how many calories it burned the last time I did it.

as far as keeping track: i don't log my workouts, but i do keep notes within each DVD case using a 6x4" post-it note. i write in things like my HRM stats (total min, avg HR, total min in HRZ), what equipment/poundage worked best, etc. it's so that when i do it again, i know what to expect, and it's not too anal - just "at a glance" stuff.

I have an Excel spreadsheet, but I haven't updated it in, oh, at least a year. Thanks for the reminder! I rarely forget what I have and don't use the spreadsheet to track what I do when, but theft and damage are always possible.

But wouldn't it be easier for a thief to get away with a lot by just grabbing the whole Rubbermaid container of DVD's?

I just keep my house messy, so that potential thieves would be unable to quickly find anything. (That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!)

the containers (plural ) are in separate closets, also in a messy house (you and i probably live in the same house, right, Kath? and just don't run into eachother too often!).

the first time it happened, he/she grabbed what was near the DVD player, w/o regard to the titles (including regular movies). and in that sweep, about 25 DVDs were taken, including library DVDs and empty cases where the DVD was still in the player.

my P90x series, which was in a zippered pouch, was untouched. i think most people assume that anything in a zippered pouch are back-up DVD-R copies or burned CDs.

Man you guys are super organized. I keep my stuff in 4 boxes from the Container Store. Well, most of it any way. Some of the dvds are in the drawers in the coffee table. CLX lives there cuz I use it all the time. I have never used a spread sheet and I don't write on the calendar. CLX is the first time I have even tracked anything. I think I'm mostly lazy.

I don't have an inventory, but I always think I should as I always think in case of a fire or something I need to give the insurance company the titles of ALL of my DVDs! I know it sounds crazy, but for that very reason (besides saving space) I keep all of my DVDs in 2 DVD 'folders', each of them holding 80 (one for cardio & strength, the other one for yoga & pilates plus some barre and Qi Gong) so in worst case I could grab both folders and run! (That is after I'd make sure my kids & cats are safe, of course! I shouldn't have to mention that. ) I'd only cry over my ~300 books, for which I should also make an inventory list, come to think of it...

But I'm rambling, sorry!

yesterday, i gathered all of my containers and DVDs that were near the TV and around the house.

i have 9 (!!) containers that hold about 37 DVDs in their cases. i have a few other series that i keep in zippered pouches (mostly beachbody series and Gilad). i started organizing them using a different method than what i had before (i used to have them separated into cardio, weights, and yoga/pilates/barre). i now have them by instructor/series. i decided to do it this way because as i mentioned in my first post, i couldn't recall if i had a particular disc from a series/instructor.

for example, pink firms and body bar.

my family was aghast at the wide expanse of DVDs standing on edge in a row while i was organizing them.

my immediate response was "but i use all of them, and i can prove it."
