Dr. Loren Fishman. more to him than just his yoga and osteoporosis study.

Dr. Loren Fishman and his yoga and osteoporosis study have been mentioned with frequency here at VF. The Doctor himself is a topic in today's New York Times (Jane Brody's column):

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/02/he...r=2&ref=health

As participant in his bone density study I recently sent in my last 2-year bonescan and continued added significant bone following his protocol. His rotator cuff work is really fascinating as well -- he's a busy guy.

I realize the Times is getting stingier re: access to its material. If you can't get to the article email me and I'll send you a link from my subscription account.

I sure wish Dr. Fishman would partner with a film studio and put the programs on DVD, or at least online via subscription. I have the book but I just do better spacing out and letting a DVD instructor guide me.

That's awesome that you continue increasing your bone mass, Sharon!

I wish he and Ellen would do a real DVD (there is one used by study participants but it is very bare-bones and not intended for general release).

When I get back to the States I'll probably do Ellen's bone density class again and I'll bring it up with her again. I think both she and Fishman are busy, busy, busy. Also, I don't think non-video people realize how dependent some of us are on the medium.

I just realized that Dr. Fishman is the author of Yoga for Arthritis which I have used for pose modifications. Based on that, I'm going to buy his osteoporosis book. The arthritis book is excellent.

Yes, I like the arthritis book as well. Ellen Saltonstall co-wrote that one also.

Thank you, Sharon. I will give this information to my DH, who recently tore his rotator cuff.

Exercise

I read the article but am not sure exactly what the exercise is?? Just pressing against the wall as shown in the illustration??? And does it make sense to do
this prior to any RC problems to strengthen that muscle ??

That's what I'd like to know. I have on and off rotator problems and was planning to have prolotherapy with Marc Darrow MD, another physiatrist. Interesting how Darrow and Fishman have the same specialty and have come up with alternative treatments to expensive surgery. I've always said that the medical industry would price themselves out of patients who would then discover, through necessity, that many alternative treatments work just as well or better for less and with few side effects.

If it were me, I would communicate my questions directly to Dr. Fishman. I gather the rotator cuff study is ongoing. Here is a preliminary overview of the technique:

I'm sure there are some of us with an interest re: this syndrome and technical expertise who have the time and the skills to find more stuff.
