I haven't voted yet, but in some fashion, I could probably justify either "After 8 p.m." or "Whenever I can!"
I'm an adaptable night owl from a family of adaptable night owls. Although I can shift my schedule especially easily, and I can appear to be a morning person (by schedule, not by stereotypical personality
), I still retain telltale traits. I'd rather do mentally taxing work later in my waking day, I I feel better overall later in my waking day, and my body just feels most like "sweaty" activity later in my waking day. If by some chance I'm happily exercising intensely at 5 a.m., I'm more likely to have been awake for hours already during the night
--in other words, I'm more likely to have risen at 4:30 p.m. than at 4:30 a.m.
Yes, I'm slightly acquainted with an idea that I "should" exercise early so that I've finished it, but that advice probably wouldn't be ideal for me--physically, psychologically, or even practically. I can't quite compare things because I've never tried to be a mainly morning exerciser, but I'm probably more consistent, fit, and happy exercising later.
(I've also never been directly subject to much especial bias or moralizing against night owls, and I avoid people who are happy to provide it.
)
Neither do I find that late exercise has ever kept me from sleep, despite a popular piece of advice from several years ago. (I don't know if this bit is related, but I also don't respond in the most expected way to caffeine. Enough of it readily stimulates me, but even high levels won't totally prevent sleep. I've known people who don't even have caffeine with lunch.)
I'm considering adding something regular in the morning, but it would be light and probably feel like a warmup for the day (in other words, I'm not trying "to burn more calories" or something), and it wouldn't be an attempt to alter my overall schedule. Of course, I could also try it at a different time or at no set time of day; I'll have to see.
