Another alternative is static lunges because they allow you to carefully get into position before doing them. If your knees still hurt, it may be a joint issue.

Also, if you're trying to keep up with the pace in a dvd, don't. Pause it and go at your own pace.

Hi Workoutjunkie,

Just meant basically that you are standing up from a sitting position in a tall box or chair and repeating. In one of BJ Gaddour's workout this was the beginning move in the squat progression and really helped me get weight back in glutes rather than quads. He progressed to weighted squats from a box to one legged squats from the seated position. Those are really hard for me!

Hope this helps, Anne Y

I only do static lunges and squats now. Floorwork also strengthens the knee.

A chair works fine for me (I'm tall, though, with lo-o-o-ng thighs; think Mary Helen Bowers). Or a step stool. I also have a ramp (a/k/a Walkblaster), and lunging onto the angled surface actually feels good for my knees. So does lunging T-Tapp style (google T-Tapp lunges if you're interested--there are a few YouTube instructionals).

Reverse lunges all the way. Target the glutes better specially of you step back from a platform like the step with 2-3 rises. That's how I do them.

No front lunges for me.
