Any apps to help with trail walking?

Can you recommend an app I can use to help me not get lost when hiking on trails?

A GPS sort of app that can read an image of the trail map and give me an idea of where on that trail I'm located? The trails near me are mostly comprised of old cow paths through the woods and not very well marked. I've gotten lost in the woods a couple of times this season and don't like it!

I've used AllTrails a few times on unfamiliar trails. It definitely saved me from getting lost!

I was also going to suggest All Trails. I think if you pay for it (they have sales occasionally), then you don't have to worry about not having cell service. I'm not sure what happens when you have the free version and no cell service. I haven't actually used it all that much but I learned about it from a friend of mine who hikes and uses it a lot.

I use the Trail Run Project app. It's free and has saved me many times! Of course, using it during a hike or trail run is dependent on having a cell signal, but I haven't had too much trouble getting it to work.

Thanks everyone! Good point about apps needing a signal ... DOH! I hadn't even considered that. I'll stay close to civilization, being a beginner level anyway.

I discovered an app already on my phone. Open Google Maps and tap the blue dot where it shows your location, then tap to save parking. I never knew that, double DOH.

Oh and just fyi, I have an email saying All Trails has a 50% off sale for Memorial Day -- $14.99 for their Pro version. That is a one year subscription.
