Running for weight loss?

If you were to do some running for weight loss what kind would you do? Tempo run or interval training? Thanks!

I believe that any time of interval training is better for weight loss and calorie burning so running should be the same.

I prefer interval running to steady state (for weight loss or not). For me it is more fun, and either way I burn a TON of calories. It is my TOP calorie burner out of everything I do.

For me intervals mean varying the intensity. So it's either incline/flat....fast/slow.... I'd highly recommend Cardio Coach MP3's for intervals. They make the time fly and Sean guides you and keeps you going.

Can you play these on a PC? I've been doing Leslie but more just doing my own thing. I was thinking of using these in a kind of Leslie/TA freestyle sort of way with in place jogging, jumping, kicks that sort of thing. Is that feasible with these?

It could work! They're audio MP3's so you can play them on your PC if you have speakers and them pause after each interval and do a Leslie segment on your TV? Alternate between the two?

I think I would leave Leslie out of it entirely and just do my own thing, just basic moves in varying intensities with a lot more jogging in place or around the room. At least that is what I was thinking about trying. I get up and do my cardio at 4:30 a.m. and my neighborhood is not condusive to outside cardio at that time (too dark, the boogie man might get me...lol) and I don't have a treadmill or any cardio equipment at home.

Tracey Staehle's Walk Strong or Walk Stronger dvds would be better for this, if you are looking for visuals.

I'll chime in with my personal experience with running. Interval Running does not help me lose weight without following a strict diet as I must keep the workouts shorter due to what my body can handle. Interval running does help me increase my speed and I definitely mix them in when I train for a race.

Running is my preferred cardio and I get a bigger calorie burn from an easy run at a 10 minute mile pace (6 mph on treadmill) for 30 minutes to an hour than most other cardio workouts of the same duration. A couple years ago when I was running 20 to 30 miles a week, within two months I dropped 15 pounds and I didn't have to watch my diet. The weight loss snuck up on me. To avoid stomach issues during longer runs, I did have to avoid heavy meals an hour and half before a run and I preferred easily digestible carbs in small amounts to help fuel my runs. I had to take a break due to an injury last year and I really had to watch my diet to prevent gaining weight. I am back to running now but only about 15 miles a week due to work and time constraints.

A good weight loss routine that I like to follow and recommend to my friends when they ask is:
  • 3 days easy 45 to 60 minute run or run/walk, and optionally mix in 5 to 10 minutes at tempo pace. Mile range is 4 to 6 miles
  • 1 day- short 15 to 20 minute interval run followed by 15 minute easy run or run/walk. Mile range is 2 to 3 miles. Some running coaches prefer that runners build up an aerobic base and focus on increasing miles for several months before adding in intervals. Depending on my mood, I many times turn this into a regular, easy 5 mile run.
  • 1 day long 90 minute run or run/walk at very easy, conversational pace. Mile range is 6 to 9 miles

Good luck with whatever you decide.
