talk to me about hypermobility

I've read that I'm not supposed to do static stretches

but I love my static stretches!!!!!

and my yin yoga
aaand that's a problem

apparently stretching out already loose tendons and ligaments is bad
but it feels so good!

gah!

My physical therapist told me I could still stretch and do yoga, but not go to my full range of motion. That's hard because I want to stretch, but it's for the best. Also, I've lost some flexibility because of age anyway.

I have (had?) knee issues and one doctor once told me (several years ago) that I am "hypermobile." He told me that not ALL stretching was bad, but that stretching too far or in such a way that would increase the laxity in your tendons and ligaments was bad. For this reason, he recommended using a foam roller to relax muscles rather than stretching and to use it on the belly of the muscle and not close to the joints.

In my own experience with my knee issues (which I consider to be fully resolved at this point), I really took the doctor's advice to heart and don't do any extensive stretching. (I do foam roll 2-3x per week.) In fact, even after a long Tonique session that involves hundreds (thousands? LOL) of squats and lunges, I don't stretch my legs. And my knees have never felt better and stronger.

Not sure if this is helpful, but maybe try a foam roller to target the areas that you feel need a stretch, rather than just engaging in static stretching which could compromise the laxity of your joints.

I've bought several foam rollers. Two from Target and two through Beachbody (when my husband got P90X sets). The Target ones are Gaiam brand, if I recall. They are not as "hard" as the ones I got through Beachbody. My next purchase is the "rumble" roller: http://www.amazon.com/DSS-RumbleRoll.../dp/B00IB6AU7I

But just looking at it makes my IT bands cry

I don't use any DVDs to foam roll, but I have watched YouTube tutorials about foam rolling and did receive guidance from my doctor/PT years ago that I still apply today. Oh, I also did P90X2 and that includes some foam rolling tips.

Youtube (which I can't cite right now) has some good stuff, BUT I broke down and got the Spinervals Flexible Warrior foam roller. It's quite comprehensive. I don't do the yoga parts of the workout, but the foam roller parts make me feel great for hours afterwards.

Be warned, as wonderful as you feel afterward, during can be a less than pleasant experience.

I've tried a few foam roller-specific DVDs. Neither impressed me. One of the best foam roller workouts I've done was on the Rachel Cosgrove D2S set. It was a short workout (maybe 10 minutes) and it hit pretty much the entire body. Get in and get out.

As has been mentioned, I love the feeling after rolling. Sometimes, WHILE rolling, a grunt or two may escape.
