Dyeing canvas sneakers? Eco-Friendly Dye Recs?

I'd like to have a pair of Keds sneakers in a spiffy color, but because I wear an extra-wide width, they only offer my size in basic white, black, navy or tan. It occurred to me that maybe I could buy a pair of the white canvas ones and dye them myself. Did a quick Google search and found directions on both Martha Stewart Living and eHow that seem fairly simple. Just wondered if anyone has ever tried it and how it turned out??

Follow-up question: Any recommendations for an eco-friendly dye? I think I'd like something in the pink family. Thanks!
