A work in progress: The VF Lexicon?

A post by someone in the Fact Fest thread about being a "newer" VF'er, as well as another one about the unique subculture that exists here made me think about this. How about if we all contribute to a list of words/phrases--and definitions-- that are unique to VF or at least got their start here? Some may have, er, migrated to other forums, but since we were one of the pioneering fitness forums, don't you think most started here:

I'm sure many of you will have your own contributions to make. Here's a start: (feel free to amend the definitions, too!)

Vidiot--an individual who proudly acquires, organizes, talks about, dreams about, and works out to fitness videos.

Lurve-to be extremely fond of a video or piece of equipment.

TIFT--"take it from the top", a habit of some instructors which meets with varying degrees of approval from vidiots, sometimes leading to

Doing a Joni O--pressing the eject button on one's VCR with great alacrity, in order to get an ANNOYING tape out as quickly as possible. Not always caused by TIFTing.

Alien Porno Bridge Music--that verrry strange electronic music during the bridgework section of, I think, FIRM Vol. 5 (please correct me, Rainy!)

Rodeo Move (not personally acquainted with this one)--a move done by Tracie Long in a Firm Basics tape that elicits much hilarity. I've never seen it, assumed to involved twirling an imaginary lasso above one's head while climbing the tall box.

But I have seen

The Dork Dance--an aberration, even for the FIRM, a short and very, er, unusual dance segment taught at the end of Vol. 4. Almost universally dissed. Involves air guitar.

WWWendy--our beloved founder and webmistress, Wendy Niemi Kremer.

Mistress Satanica Arbiter of the toughest workouts in existence, creatrix of many more. Alter ego of a VF'er who has a strange fondness for Smithfield ham. Watch out for your gif's when she's on a rampage!

OK, bring on the rest--I know there are plenty more!

Well, here are a few I could think of:

Doing a Susan P - replying to your own post with afterthoughts (where have you been, girl?)

Plus some common video name appreviations:
Cathe Friedrichs:
MIS/MIC - Maximum Intensity Strength/Cardio
PS - Pure Strength (sometimes also refers to Powerstrike!)
S&H - Slow and Heavy
I-Max - Interval Max

GHAS - Cory Everson's Get Hard Arms and Shoulders
WAP - Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds
GHAS - Cory Everson's Get Hard Arms and Shoulders

Some fave instructors we call by first name as if we know them personally:
Mindy (Mylrea)
Christi (Taylor)
Franny (Benedetto)
Kari (Anderson)
Jay (Blahnik)
Andre (Houle)
Greg (Twombly of CIA)
Rodney (Yee)

Nicknames:
The Anderson Sisters a.k.a. "Sinister Sisters" - Shannon Salisbury and Alison Boyd

CIA - Creative Instructors Aerobics, www.ciavideo.com
SASE - self addressed stamped envelope - not unique to VF, but usually means FREE VIDEO!

Hmmm

Great idea! Here are a few more:

Paulagate: a rather unpleasant scandal involving a person who was pretending to be at least 4 and possibly 6 or 7 different distinct VF personalities. Snide remarks about "neuro-surgery," supermodels, and fitness trainers to the stars usually relate to this.

Yogish: watered down yoga poses that are haphazardly thrown into cardio or strength videos just so they can say "includes yoga" on the side of the box.

Mini-topper: the square shaped mini-step that Cathe uses in some of her strength videos and that some ingenious VFers have managed to replicate using spare thrift store/garage sale steps, bolts and glue.

I'm sure there are others I will think of later on, but for me it's the unique use of the apostrophe here at VF. Only at VF can we say "have you tried the new Firm's, Mindy's, or Christi's yet?". Even though using an apostrophe in this way would be seen as incorrect elsewhere, it's fine here .

It's been a while, but ...

This one dates back at least 2 or 3 different VF software incarnations, but I still have fond feelings for the VFers known as the BWB-- "babes with butts." I don't remember all the criteria for membership in this less than exclusive club, but it seems to me that having a rear that could substitute for a tall box was one or them.

Speaking of which, there is a sub-category of "FIRM-speak" that includes "tall box," "bridge work," "fanny lifter," and more.

Renee, love your summary of Paulagate. Don't forget the Dublin Marathon, the twins and the missing jewelry!

I think it was from Hare/SBHT, actually. Rainy?? Poor thing is still probably grading papers..... haven't seen her post in ages.

And what Firm tape is the tuba fart music from? That needs to be in the lexicon.

I love this!

My only contribution is to suggest a refinement to the definition of "lurve". To me, it's much more than fondness - more a cross between love and worship. And I always say it (okay, in my mind at least) really drawn out, like "luhhrrrve".

For example, I tolerate the FIRM, I really like Cathe, but I lurve Andre. Or, I like Luna bars, but I lurve chocolate.

This is excellent, is there some way of making it permanent on the site?

As a relatively new VFer, two I have had to learn are:

virgin: a tape one is doing for the first time

dust bunny: a tape that has sat on one's shelf for a long time without being done

Also I know this one is relatively new here, but I now use the term slaying a dragon to refer to doing any video that I have been afraid of.

simply..

just the use of the word "vf'er"..or VF. It's a regular noun now in my mental dictionary.

as an aside, I really really really really really really can't STAND the word LURVE. and I refuse to even say it in person. you dont know how hard it was for me to type just then.

there..just had to get that OFF my chest..back to my cave.
