Hmmm....maybe it's a private (unlisted) group? Yes, just realized it is. It definitely has VF members in it, so I'm not sure how people can join at this point.

The sales tax for Texas residents - even on Kindle books delivered via the Internet - is because of a legal settlement with the Texas AG's Office. Texas was going to sue Amazon because they had some sort of warehouse in the DFW area, I think, and that's enough of a "nexus" for Texas to say they have to charge sales tax.

I think the requirement for a tax ID number is an overly zealous or overly cautious approach by Amazon. The 1099 dollar threshold is way higher than where they are requiring tax ID's from their sellers. I was doing tax work when they first started asking for Tax ID numbers - I knew the rules and argued with them about it, but they would not budge.
