I bow to your supreme wisdom and self-control, Alison!

I gotta say that while I like, respect and admire Tracie Long, I've never been as "into" her as others have been. I'd stopped doing Firm workouts around the time her videos were released so I only learned about and tried her workouts years later, and I didn't enjoy Tortoise, and Tough Tape. (Hare's ok.) Her independent workouts are mostly excellent but they often take a while for me to get into and some I just don't really enjoy, excellent or not.

For me the Firm is, and always has been, primarily Volumes 1-4.

Ha, don't hand out the accolades yet. Knowing me, I'll stick to this a week and then BUY THEM ALL.

I am in the same boat about the magic with the TLTs and feeling a little disappointed with the first release of the Longevity set. I do think that leaning out is so much more like the TLT set, so I clicked better with the latest releases. Tracie does have a huge learning curve though! The more you do the work outs, like barre, the harder they get. You learn how to engage correctly, and not just swing your body through it. So if you didn't click with the TLT set, either try them again and really focus on form, or just give up on Tracie and decide it's not for you.

If you want more like vol. 1, I think your closest is Vol. 3, 4 or firm strength and firm cardio ( Also called something like strong heart... and something else). Those are your closest. Vol. 2, which I am personally biased against, is light weights, cardio work out that isn't anything different from something like tonique. Vol. 3, which is more dancy, is a big longer, and has a lot more ankle weight use, and is an interval style work out, and first to use the tall box. Vol. 4 has Susan again (frick'n four months after having a baby or something sick like that!!) with another gal, and they trade off. It's short and sweet and very effective. Firm strength is awesome! It's pretty close in format to vol. 1 I feel like. Heavy lifting with sprinkles of light cardio followed by legs at the end (this time it's only inner thighs). Firm Cardio has Heidi lead it and it's fun, lighter weights, with a leg section at the end. So, there is your quick break down :-) You should just SAS for VHS to see if you like them.

Wow, thanks for that Cliff Notes Version! I am quite ignorant when it comes to the FIRM and they all kind of run together for me. This helps!

Firm Vol. 2 was actually my first Firm and one of my earliest workout videos. DH and I used to use it 3x a week religiously and we both had really great results. I don't agree that it's like Tonique. The standing work isn't never-ending like Tonique and, like Vol. 1, it's half floorwork anyway.

It does require lighter weights and Janet IS a bona fide sex kitten but I thought she was so gorgeous and she was an entertaining hoot to watch. DH thought so, too!

If you still have a VCR you should be able to pick up old videotapes cheaply on Amazon.

In the totally useless advice column, I say don't get Leaning Out because of the bad grammar of that title.

Quote:
Definitions of leaning on the Web:

an inclination to do something; "he felt leanings toward frivolity"
proclivity: a natural inclination; "he has a proclivity for exaggeration"
tilt: the property possessed by a line or surface that departs from the vertical; "the tower had a pronounced tilt"; "the ship developed a list to starboard"; "he walked with a heavy inclination to the right"
the act of deviating from a vertical position
atilt: departing or being caused to depart from the true vertical or horizontal; "the leaning tower of Pisa"

I just might finally crack them open. Congratulations to you and keep up the great work and thanks for sharing your story.
Thanks Carmee!!

My personal running joke about Vol. 2 is the amount of times Janet cues by saying "And go!". I think I counted 37 or something when last I did it. She doesn't explain what's coming next, she just says "and go!". I'm sure if you did it enough, you could fall in love with it, and look past the bad cueing. But if you want to talk breathy pornish, vol. 2 is way more then Susan in vol. 1 lol. When Janet is doing the leg work and she in her breathy way goes "and in, and out, and in and out" I burst out laughing, EVERYTIME :-) I know a lot of people who really love this work out, so don't let me sway you. Go ahead "and go" for it

I got stronger. My endurance increased. My balance is phenominal. My waistline whittled down to 28 inches. I felt great!! I've always been blessed with flexibility, but I finally learned how to stretch my hamstrings with a little modification Tracie did at the end of BBBB. Those workouts just seemed to be made for me.

I think that's why I was so disappointed in the volume issues with Tracie's first Longevity workouts and the fact that I just didn't click with the Focus format. I was looking for more of the magic that had been there before. To me, Leaning Out has recaptured it and I'm so hopeful that Defined Lines is just as awesome.

I did have a learning curve in that Tracie's workouts were different than the Firm, Cathe, FitPrime workouts that I had previously been doing. Also, I had lost about 55 pounds before the TLTs/Tracie's helped me reach my goals.

Over the past couple of years I've gained 20 pounds (life got in the way) that have stubbornly hung around - until now. I am happy to report that since I am back doing Tracie's workouts regularly again -- my pants aren't as tight and the scale is finally moving in the right direction. Definite motivation to keep focusing on Tracie's workouts again.

HTH. If you would like any additional information -- please feel free to ask!
Kathy
Dear Kathy,

I only get to check online once a day and I am returning to this thread now but I wanted to thank you for your comments. I will have to check these out. I do mostly Leslie these days (and have been on and off for a long time now) and I just added Project You into the mix, but I am wondering if I should get something else for variety. Also considering the Firm Classics...
