lower body strength work necessary?

I admit I am just not a fan of lower body workouts. I have trouble fitting in strength training with cardio and yoga.

I do short upper body strength training once or twice a week.

I do Body Combat at least twice a week, and those always include leg conditioning tracks and ab work. My other cardio is dance and riding my recumbent bike, so my lower body is worked with those. I also consistently do yoga.

Are separate lower body workouts really necessary for me? I'm not much of a fan of floorwork, and Body Combat usually includes squats and lunges among other lower body work.

Thanks!
Sherry

I think you are getting enough lower body work with Body Combat, dance, bike, and yoga. Times when I have done lower-intensive cardio like running, I didn't do much if any separate LB work, and I think Body Combat is a full-body workout also.

I think you're getting enough strength work in the lower body.

Have you ever had a DEXA bone scan? I may be the voice of dissension, but I believe that heavier weight-training must be a part of a regimen to protect the bones.

I don't think that body weight training is enough for bone building/preserving.

I was thinking along these lines too.

I haven't had a DEXA scan. Is there a certain age this is usually done, or do you need to ask for it? I am also worried about the cost. We have a high insurance deductible.

Thanks!

Probably true, but as someone who’s wrists can’t do heavy weights and who dislikes heavy weights, I don’t go there. I try to compensate as best I can by doing a lot of walking and other weight bearing cardio.

I cannot do heavy weights due to shoulder/neck/lower back issues.
