I have O/A in my hands and was referred to Rheumatologist BY the Orthopedic physician who saw me first.

Well, I'm sorry - I'm going to confuse things even more by saying - I found a physiotherapist as helped me the most with my arthritis issues. The rheumy tested me and was able to diagnose but he was mostly concerned with medicating me or referring me to a surgeon. My cousin who had the same condition as you mentioned - had the most relief from following advice of a naturopath! So, it's a tough call, I guess. I wish you luck.

My mom has arthritis in her feet, very painful, and is getting tremendous relief from physical therapy prescribed by a physician of unknown variety. She's thrilled at how much function she has regained and how much less pain she has. I think ultimately the best thing either doc could do would be prescribe PT so you can learn to take care of yourself best. Good luck with this. I know it can be very painful!

Kind of a mixed bag now, of answers, between the Rheumatologist and Orthopedic. All I know is I'm not having any surgery and don't want any "drugs', just want to know what exercises I should do or not do, so I don't make it worse.

Doing alot of therapeutic type, gentler workouts; at this point, it's all I feel like doing. Plan to change up the workouts I've been doing and scale things down, for good. Lots of dvds to purge!
Medical Doctors are trained to treat ailments with medications. If you don't want drugs you are barking up the wrong tree. The doctor could prescribe physical therapy for you. Call the office that you are interested in going to and ask to speak with the nurse. Tell her what you are looking for and she can relay your message to the doctor. It will be easier to get the nurse to the phone than the doctor.

If you don't want to take drugs or have surgery, there are many other options. Exercise is a must, you must keep the muscles and tendons strong around the weak hip joint. In my experience (OA of the hip) ballett/barre type of exercises are the best since they are no impact and strengthen all the big and small muscles around the hip. Yoga/pilates are also crucial for flexibility so is keeping the weight down with good nutrition.
There is no cure for OA except some anti inflammatory drugs and pain killers to treat pain. Physical therapists and chiropractors can also help to build strength and work on alignment and flexibility.
