I need some cyber hugs

I turned 40 in February and my life just seems to have gone down hill since then. I've been having this crazy foot pain in my left foot. Started when the weather got nice and I started walking again. It got to be so bad that I was limping home. I finally bit the bullet and went to my Dr., who then sent me to a foot/ankle specialist. He sent me to have an MRI because he couldn't see a whole lot on my x-ray. So I went to get the results yesterday. It turns out I have A vascular Necrosis of the navicular bone. 30% of my bone is dead, it's affecting the joint surface and I also have 25% Arthritis of the joint because of it. I'm so beside myself! They have to remove the bone, replace it with a bone from my leg. Replace that bone with a cadaver bone and also put screws in. I will have a stiff foot, meaning I will lose a lot of right to left movement. 6-10 weeks no weight on it with a cast , then 4 weeks in a boot then gradually progress to shoe. Swelling for one year and no biking, walking, running for 6-12 months. I'm freaking out! I have 3 kids and no family that can help me. I put up with a really rough work year to be able to take off and spend time with my kids this summer. I'm seriously beside myself right now If I opt no surgery I have to go in every month for an X-Ray, the arthritis will get worse, it will effect the joint more and because this is so rare, there's no way to tell how bad it will eventually get if I don't have it taken care of.

Hugs to you! I'm so sorry for your foot pain. I know the prospect of surgery and recovery must be scary, especially with no family to help out.

I'm very sorry for your suffering and painful medical condition. My dd had surgery on her nevicular bone too. She had it removed too. Take a breath and let your brain slowly process all this information that has been thrown at you.

Number one, are you happy with your foot surgeon? We went to a sports surgeon who specialized in hand and foot surgery. My dd actually had 2 nevicular bones in her foot and the outside bone had detached from the tendon that held it in place. It had to be totally removed and her tendon was reattached to her inside nevicular bone with metal screws. She's flat footed and 10% of all flat footed people have a double nevicular bone. It doesn't become a problem unless you are very active. She had a boot and crutches, then just a cast, for 6 months. She recovered, rehabbed it, and went on to win state champion in breaststroke.

You have to have the surgery or you will be in constant pain. You need to be comfortable with your doctor. Just take it one step at a time, no pun intended. The worst part will be immediately after your surgery. Then it will get better and better, as you graduate to no crutches and a smaller cast etc.

You can do this. Just arm yourself with information. Best wishes for your recovery and please post more for support, if you feel comfortable. Casey

Hugs!!! Broken foot! Is there much time to prepare and get support for your recovery time? It's a lot to take in all at once, but there must be some silver lining to look forward to. Sending you love!

Lots of cyber moral support coming your way! At least you know what the problem is and how to address it, and there's a timeline on recovery. You can and will be pain-free eventually, it's just going to take time to get there.
