OFF TOPIC: Pet food recalls

Sorry for the OT post (my first and hopefully only).

Recalls for cat food:
http://www.menufoods.com/recall/product_cat.html

for dog food:
http://www.menufoods.com/recall/product_dog.html

and check with your pet food's website as there are voluntary recalls not on this list including CANNED: Mighty Dog, Science Diet, Iams, and Eukanuba.

Exclamation OFF TOPIC: FYI Dog, Cat Food Recalled After Pet Deaths

Since we are a forum of pet lovers (especially dogs and cats), I am posting this FYI:

WASHINGTON (AP) — A major manufacturer of pet foods sold throughout North America under dozens of store names is recalling millions of containers of its products while working to determine what caused kidney failure and some deaths of cats and dogs.

Menu Foods said Saturday it is recalling dog food sold under 46 brands and cat food sold under 37 brands and distributed throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. The pet foods were sold by major retailers, including Wal-Mart, Kroger and Safeway.

the precautionary recall of a portion of the dog and cat food is manufactured between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007. The recall is limited to "cuts and gravy" style pet food in cans and pouches manufactured at two of the Fund's United States facilities. These products are both manufactured and sold under private-label and are contract-manufactured for some national brands.

A complete list of the recalled products along with product codes, descriptions and production dates is available from the Menu Foods website, . Consumers with questions can also call (866) 895-2708.http://www.menufoods.com/recall

please help?! I buy canned Science Diet, but when I went to their website as you suggested, I don't see any voluntary recalls listed?

Whew! I'm glad dry foods weren't included. I've been feeding my shih tzu Eagle Pack and Canidae dry foods. Anyway, this is really horrible for pets eating those affected canned foods!

This is driving me crazy because Menu contracts to something like 20 major petfood brands and only a couple have come forward with information.

I want to know what other brands could be involved.

I read the Letter to Investors at Menu Foods' site and think I'm probably okay with Whiskas and Pedigree, if Eukanuba/Iams was their "largest customer", since I would think both of those would be bigger. But, I want somebody to tell us for sure.

Oh, and to make this workout related, I'm missing my workout time, trying to figure out if I'm poisoning my kitties. And that really stinks because Get Ready, Step, Go came in the mail this morning.

Thanks for posting the link...luckily the one we use for our dog wasn't on the list (although the brand was, the UPC & dates didn't match). Whew! Our dog is really old and his poor system couldn't handle much.

Another precaution

If you go the website for menufoods, they don't list IAMs and Eukanuba which are included in the recall ( I think the reason being that Proctor & Gamble doesn't like to advertise that this manufacturer makes their pet food as well as that of a million other pet food companies). The info for that is here: http://us.iams.com/iams/en_US/jsp/IA...ticleID=300003

My dog has the affected food, but not for the date codes given. However, for all I know her food from last week could have been part of the recalled batch. At least she seems okay. I hope everyone's pets stay healthy!

Oh my

Thank you all so much for the info.
Even though we don't have our dogs yet, our family will be getting 2 german shepard pups with in the next few months and yes like a doting "doggie mom", I've been reading everything I can and gathering things for the pups in advance.
You all have saved us a lot of headach and heartache.
