Anna, I have met my goal too; I'm not sure how I surpassed the first year of the pandemic!

I really liked The Goblin Emperor, but I keep bailing out on the sequel/spin-off (The Witness for the Dead). It took me a few starts before I got into TGE, too, so maybe I should try again. Especially since it seems to be the beginning of a series.

By that same author: The Angel of the Crows. I enjoyed this but it’s most unabashedly Sherlock wing-fic/fan fiction. Even so, it was interesting.

Anyone reading Christmas/holiday themed books? I’m in the mood for some uplifting light reading in between my usual mystery, suspense, & non fiction fare. These are the ones on my list. I’ve read all but the last two which I’ll be working on soon. I’m enjoying them even though they are predictable and a bit cheesy, lol.

Recently completed:
  • State of Terror by Hillary Rodham Clinton and Louise Penny — loved it!
  • The Fortunate Ones by Ed Tarkington — loved it!

DNF:
  • The Hollywood Spy by Susan Elia MacNeal — I think I'm done with this series
  • The Rose Code by Kate Quinn — too chick litty for me

Currently reading: Camino Winds by John Grisham — enjoying it so far

On the horizon: used book sales at two (count 'em, two!) library branches — one this weekend, the other next weekend

I think "My Sister's Keeper" would be a good one to start with, as long as you don't mind court cases in your books....she seems to have them in many of her books. If you watch the movie someday (I only watched it once) they changed the ending, of course.

I'm sure your library would have her books, or they can be found at book sales also. I hope you enjoy it. Well, enjoy is probably the wrong word. Her books are not light reading.

[QUOTE=LindaL;2948469]I am making my way through Joanna Schaffhausen's Ellery Hathaway series. It is so good. The characters are really superb and while the plot covers some gruesome topics, it doesn't seem overly violent or disturbing to me.

I love this series too! Like everything else I'm behind on this series. I haven't read the last two and she's coming out with her fifth book next month.

Jodi Picoult's books are hit or miss with me but Small Great Things is a good one.
Sorry Sherry - I don't mean to hijack your suggestion!

No problem. They are hit and miss for me as well. I gave up on her last book quickly. I may give it another try.

I just started the short story collection A Lot Like Christmas by Connie Willis that's all Christmas, all the time.

The ones I've read so far are fairly light/glib.

Edit: Stayed up too late reading this one, and wound up skipping a few that just didn't grab me. Still only about halfway through.

I appreciate you both giving it thought for me and letting me know that you've found her books to be hit or miss.
