New books!

Thanks for the list.

I've finished The Woman in the Water and decided to start the series over, with A Beautiful Blue Death to see where it all started. My memory was a bit fuzzy on the beginnings of things.

Anna - thanks for mentioning that book/series - sounds like something i would enjoy.

I'm reading a newer Maisie Dobbs book right now - A Dangerous Place. I took a break from this series and I'm catching up now, although i do feel like i want to go back and re-read from the beginning to refresh my memory on some things. I enjoyed the books, so it won't be a chore to re-read and I will fit in between other books!

I'm listening to Catching Fire (Hunger Games trilogy) in the car.

I have a snow day today! I'm reading the latest in the downward dog mystery series, Pre-Meditated Murder.

I recently finished The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter. Did not really enjoy it. Too much repetition of some really horrific events; I found the characters mostly annoying and unlikable as well. Had little to no interest in the "sister drama." 2.25/5.

I wanted to give up about 1/3 of the way through. But I kept going, thinking I was going to be rewarded by this supposedly AMAZING TWIST towards the end (I started reading it based on it being listed in an article about books with INCREDIBLY UNEXPECTED twists). Um, no. I mean, I won't say I was expecting that information to come to light, but I hardly found it shocking - or even interesting. The book has good reviews from critics and readers so it appears I'm in the minority on my feelings about this one.

Since then, I've read about 20% of Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine and I'm loving it so far.

I totally agree with you on this- this book was the very definition of gratuitous violence. So unnecessary and so explicit and so repetitive.

You're welcome! It's one I've enjoyed, but I do remember that parts of the first were kind of a bit dark for my taste.

If I remember right, it gets more cozy/less grim as the series moves on, and that's a good thing.

And editing to add that I just received a copy of Penric's Fox by Lois McMaster Bujold, just recently out in hardback. Pre-ordered it, so it managed to arrive fairly quickly after the publication date. This is a reliable series by a wonderfully entertaining author.

In recent years I seem to be reading and rereading from an increasingly short list of authors, but I am enjoying myself, for sure.

Next up in new books for me, the new Anna Lee Huber, coming out in a few more days.

In re-reads, I'm thinking I'll revisit the Wrinkle in Time series. This one wasn't a favorite when I was a kid, I'm curious to see what I think now.

I agree as well. It was just too dark for me, and it kept repeating the violent scenes.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who felt that way about The Good Daughter.

I finished Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine last night and wow - what an amazing book. I laughed, I cried - just all-around stellar. I rated it 5/5 on GoodReads and I NEVER rate anything that high. I am already mourning the end of it, as I know all too well that finding a book that I absolutely love and adore doesn't happen everyday (heck I'm lucky if it happens once/year).

I have been hearing good things about Little Fires Everywhere, so I am thinking I may start that one next.
