I was gone for the weekend to visit DH's family and I sat and read a lot. I finished:

Radio Girls - Sarah-Jane Stratford - I enjoyed this one. It was different.

Fatal Identity - Marie Force - The next in this series. I enjoyed it, although it's starting to get a little repetitive.

The Age of Miracles - Karen Thompson Walker - I'm not sure if this was just a "coming of age" story or a story specifically for teens. Regardless, I thought it was amazingly good.

Founders' Keeper - Ed Markham - I enjoyed this thriller on my Kindle app. It kept me guessing to the end.

Confessions of a Prairie Bitch - Alison Arngrim - I finally finished this on my Kindle. It was really good for a memoir.

I'll come back and update what I'm actually reading later. I hope everyone had a good holiday weekend.

I finished When the English Fall by David Williams yesterday.

Today I started Rabbit Cake by Annie Hartnett. I'm also reading When the Music's Over by Peter Robinson.

On my nightstand: the ARC for Wiley Cash's latest novel (The Last Ballad, to be released October 3) and Stay with Me by Ayobami Adebayo. I also want to reread Station Eleven before the local NEA Big Read begins next month.

I'm reading Innocent Blood by PD James. Apparently I like it because I keep putting off the chance to do other things so I can get back to it.

New on my to be read pile:

The Fifth Doll by Charlie Holmberg
The Sudden Appearance of Hope by Claire North

Do you have a favorite in the series?

I've read all of Ngaio Marsh's Inspector Alleyn series, but haven't been quite as thorough with P. D. James/Ruth Rendell. Mostly because she's so prolific, LOL!

The Al Franken book is basically a biography. He talks about his upbringing in MN, how he got into comedy and the transition to politics. He mentions his staff putting his statements and speeches through a "dehumorizer" so people would take him seriously as a Senator. He also has some great stories about his fellow senators. It is pretty funny, although due to other reading commitments I haven't finished it. He signed my copy when he appeared in a town near me as a guest of a local bookshop.

It's been a long while since I read a PD James, they've all kind of run together so I can't name a specific favorite. But I don't remember any I didn't like.

I've read a lot of Ruth Rendell too, liked her earlier ones more than her later ones. I especially liked the Inspector Wexford series.

Anna, PD James and Ruth Rendell are two different people, though both were prolific and given life peerages as Baronesses.

Rendell did originally write her Inspector Wexford books under her own name and some of her stand alone psychological suspense under the name Barbara Vine. My favorites of hers are Judgement in Stone and her first Barbara Vine, A Dark-Adapted Eye.

But it would be hard to go wrong with anything written by either of them.
