I'm 61 and this year due to COVID and getting to work from home (and skipping the commute) I have consistently worked out. (previously I'd workout for a few months and then do nothing for months or I would start a new routine for a few weeks and then not do anything for weeks)

I need to lose 15 pounds, which I am working on, but other than that, I feel like I am in pretty good shape. I don't do high impact but I still do tall box climbs!

Exercise really is the fountain of youth. I keep telling myself that to motivate myself to push play.

Liz
I'm off to see if i can get up off the floor without assistance!

I don’t have any trouble getting up off the floor, but I remember reading something about how you should be able to get off the floor without using your arms and that definitely was more difficult.
I understand what you’re saying. I was thinking of a young, shirtless and hot
Kurt Russell as a fireman when I said that :-) I was trying to be lighthearted and fun in my response to your post. I thought my levity was easy to see. Apparently it wasn’t :-(

Even though I am a senior, (and have absolutely no problem getting up off the floor without the use of my arms) I can still appreciate a good looking man’s arms around me.

Karla, I live out in the country and if I ever need a fireman or EMT it would be a volunteer from my town that I probably know pretty well and after seeng them act like dorks in the bars, I’ve thought, “Please God, don’t ever let Jimmy come to my rescue!” We don’t have any Kurt Russells around except that most of them are chauvinistic and are really into hunting.

I think you're describing my brothers.

I can get up off the floor with no hands. I'm actually in good shape. I have good aerobic capacity and the strength to do most activities. The weak link is the back injury. I have to be very careful to avoid another vertebral fracture. (Heck, I could have had more as it never stopped hurting.)

Since that injury, I have done a lot of back and core work. I finally have a 4-pack after all these years.

This is a bad time to be a senior, IMHO. We are more vulnerable to Covid. I am distracted all the time by the current situation. I live in the country's biggest virus hot spot. And, they don't have enough vaccines even for health care workers, let alone those 65 plus.

I have been saddened to see that too many younger folks don't give a rat's ass if they catch the virus and give it to their elders. Seniors have never been valued in our culture and it has become worse.

Instead of forgetting where I put the car keys or my glasses, I worry I won't have enough masks. I've even had nightmares where I am in a crowd and can't find my mask.

The high stress levels aren't good for the brain.

Adding to VVF post many retired seniors keep active with volunteering. This keeps them busy, feeling worthwhile and mentally sharp. But there is no volunteering right now so healthy seniors are struggling to find ways to stay busy.
I work in a library and our Friends group and volunteers are chomping at the bit to be doing something again.

An article in our paper today said it would be several months before the general population is vaccinated here.

I’ve heard way too many people say they won’t get the shot because it gives you the virus.

Very true. I've noticed the effect on my brain this past year.

I think that's where most of my stress is coming from, I can't interact with people as I did before.

Oh yeah, this exactly. Night driving is worse but depending on the road, conditions and other drivers' behavior, my driving anxiety can be so bad I can hardly breath.

This 73-year-old is still volunteering for two library Friends groups. Our local group in particular has found ways to stay engaged. We haven’t been able to hold in-person book sales, and we just closed our little book shop again because of rising virus case numbers. But we’ve found a lot of ways to stay busy. We opened a new online bookstore, we’re continuing our book giveaway program, we’ve held an online fundraiser and a membership campaign, we have another virtual fundraiser coming up next month, and we’re taking an annual author lecture online in March. With the help of our amazing Communications Committee volunteers, my best friend (she’s older than I am) and I, who co-chair the committee, have published three print newsletters and a monthly enewsletter in addition to a weekly enewsletter that goes to our core group of volunteers. And we’ve posted on social media consistently, too. But I know this level of activity hasn’t been going on in a lot of Friends groups, especially the smaller ones.

ETA: The majority of our volunteering is happening virtually right now. Our Board and committees meet on Zoom, and we use email and smartphones (texts and calls) to keep in touch. My best friend and I talk, email, and/or text almost every day.
