No More Burpees!!!

That's it. No more Burpees. I never liked them, never wanted to do them and now, I just can't do them.

For those of you that have banished Burpees, what do you in place of them?

Hahaha! I could have written this. I hate burpees and mountain climbers. In their place, I usually do pushups on my knees, but at the same speed as whatever dreaded thing is happening.

My athletic club has a Crossfit section. They're offering a class called Legends -- you have to be at least 50 to get into it, and many of the folks are in their 60's and above. The instructors like burpees -- and I among others make faces and say "Ugh."

They have what they call the RX version of burpees -- the regular one. But there are also modifications. The super modification starts at lying prone, making sure that your entire chest is in contact with the floor. The next step is to push yourself to your knees, then get up however you want. The finish is standing straight up with your arms over your head, a clap, and maybe a slight jump. As we get stronger, we progress. There is a lady in the group who has severe arthritis, and they have been modifying all the exercises for her. Last Saturday, she was working on doing the super modified burpee -- very impressive.

When I am not in a burpee mood I do scissor runs/hammer times, hamstring curl hops, or half burpees (not coming up all the way).

It's so funny you posted this. I've been doing Bodyshred and I swear it's just a series of different pushups and burpees in each phase. I realize they're both good for me, but I guess I crave variety.

I decided this morning no more Bodyshred and no endless burpees!

I think a good modification is to do them with your hands on your step (or on the bottom of the stairway even) or with your hands on a chair. Even just being a little bit off the floor makes it easier. Another thing you can do is just put one foot back at a time so it's like step-step back and step-step in instead of jumping; it's like a low impact form of burpee.

I also modify by putting my hands on the step or an ottoman. At my age (68) the up and down movement is too hard on my lower back.
I am always disappointed when instructors use them too much.

Never did the high impact version -- have been doing the step-step low impact version forever

Jen Sinkler posted something about alternatives to burpees. I will try to dig it up and post it here or if is a document (I own several of her programs) I will describe it.

ETA: I usually modify squat thrusts by doing them off of a club step.
