Years ago but the pain was just AWFUL for 24 hours, I mean AWFUL and then went away. I remember doing lukewarm rinses (baking soda and sea salt) and lots of barely hot tea.

i was going to start a thread here about reversing gum disease. i'm getting 3's and 4's on receding gums. just the other day, my dentist, in vague terms, hinted that i had gum disease!! at this point, i don't know if 3's and 4's constitute gum disease, but i'm hoping i can reverse it.

from what i'm reading on the net, i can, but it'll take time and consistency on my part.

meanwhile, dentist is putting me on a more frequent, 3 month, "deep cleaning" schedule rather than the 6 month schedule.

Thank you all so much! Wow I'm surprised to come home from running errands and seeing to many responses. I feel validated and have hope it will all be so worth it soon.

This is phase two of getting my orthodontics off - the lower gums were down to the root from years of crookedness and it looks like they did a lot of work on it. I opted for anesthesia and was on Vicodin for about four days the pain was so bad, so maybe the "fumes" are still bothering me? When I called yesterday the nurse also determined that I'd developed a "bacterial pocket" despite the course of antibiotics so maybe fighting that off too is draining me. Ugh the antibiotics were another story, they made me sick.

Those who've posted that the lack of decent food contribute - I think that is part of it as well.

Thank you for letting me whine!!! If you need this surgery, don't let my post deter you please. We want to keep those chompers.

Oh, Pat....

I have nothing to offer, no experience at all, but just have to chime in with some sympathy here! That sounds awful. ((((Pat)))) --I hope you feel better soon.

I'm glad you called the office yesterday; sounds like they weren't too helpful but at least you know it's somewhat OK/normal to be feeling this way at this point or they would've wanted to see you.

Dang. Poor Pat. *gentle pats*

I had gum surgery a few years ago, and yes, it was AWFUL!

I just wasn't getting better and the roof of my mouth hurt so bad that I couldn't even eat. At my check up my doctor discovered that I had a canker sore (caused by the stress) where he took the graft from and that's why I was in so much pain and why it was too painful to eat.

I just wanted to say that if your gums recession becomes too much you can get bone loss so keep that in mind! A dentist I no longer see held off in recommending & doing a graft. When he finally suggested I had a little bone loss not a huge amount. The dentist is very important because my DH had it done by a different dentist who did a bad job & it e's redone by my periodontist. The first time I had it done they had to re do months later not do to the doctor but do to my healing. He did it again with perfect results. I had another one years later & it took well. He used my roof of my mouth for graft, used numbing for my mouth & I did not take pain killers except Tylenol. I get nausea with pain meds. I actually was moving around after each & not more then usual tired. So I suppose I tolerate this more than many. I am due for grafting this coming week (thread do timely) 2 areas this time one on each side of my mouth. I be really bruised as I bruise easy but think I will be okay or at least hope so! Pat is sounds like you are going through more than it should be. If you don't get any satisfaction, try a second opinion to make sure you are okay! HUGS!!

Fran, that is an important point that receding gums can lead to bone loss. In my case you could see so much root the orthodontist said my new straight teeth were bound to fall out in a few years and I wanted to keep them. Maybe I'm just a big weenie, huh?

Debbie, ouch a canker sore in the host site? Yow.

Aw Susan you are so sweet, thank you!

I had this surgery done about 5 years ago and remember only feeling rough for just a couple of days. Ice cream and smoothies were my best friends for about a good week though! I did only have two teeth grafted in the front lower portion of my mouth, so nothing too extensive...maybe that's why I was feeling decent after only a few days tops??

Hope u feel better soon

Pat,

Sending healing thoughts your way -- been there! I wanted to chime in because my experience is a little different than many experiences. My peridontal surgeon actually put me on "couch rest." He suggested I *not do anything* for at least two weeks, and he prescribed strong pain meds for the first four days (I think I used them for two days, but stayed on Ibuprofen longer). I have talked to a few other people who have had gum grafts, and they did not have the activity restriction that I had. But, I wanted to make sure the graft "took," so I was obedient! Believe me, as an exercise junkie, that wasn't easy.

I only had two teeth done, but the root exposure was significant. And, I did have the tissue taken from the roof of my mouth, so I had to go through the dental plate and soft foods as well.

This is all to say -- my surgeon treated this like a very serious, slow healing surgery. I'll never know if such severe restrictions were warranted (and if I need another go-round, I will get a second opinion on this); the surgeon's rationale was that I needed to make sure I didn't divert blood flow from the wounded gums. I did feel pretty crummy the first week; by the second week, though, I really wanted to start moving more, but he told me to wait it out--and in fact, it was almost three weeks before me he gave me the okay to go on walks--a month before I could resume working out.
I hope things go well from here for you.
