Another (dumb) tech question

HI!
I'd like to know if I sign up for a streaming service, would I just hook my computer up to my smart TV and that's it?

Inquiring minds, and all that.

Yes, it's as simple as that. The only caveat is figuring out the right cable. I.E., does your laptop have standard HDMI, mini HDMI, Thunderbolt, or USB-C? But they make cables for any of these to the TV's HDMI in port.

If your smart TV supports Chromecast, that's even easier. If it doesn't, you can stick an inexpensive chromecast into the TV's HDMI port. We've actually watched movies on our TV playing on my husband's computer that is in his den this way. Only works for things playing in the browser, but if you're streaming, it's coming through the browser.

This is actually how I play any Youtube video on my non-smart TV. My Mac Mini is connected directly to the TV in my workout room. I do have to use the remote to change the source. I think most smart TVs will do that automatically but I'm not sure.

you may be able to stream on your Smart TV through a direct app if the streaming site offers one or the TV's internet browser app without a cable but there are lots of incompatibilities.
all depends on your TV's brand/model and internet provider.

If using a HDmi cable, you may need to change the HDmi input on your tv.
Also you may have to adjust your audio if using a computer.

I much prefer connecting to a website using a mobile phone rather than a pc/laptop because the video plays better.
I have dumb tvs and prefer connecting to the Chromecast with an android phone.
ROKU works great without a phone if there is an app for the site but if I want to stream from a website on a ROKU, I use the Web Video Caster app on my mobile.
