Grateful to be fit!

Hi all. I was hiking in with my husband on Saturday and stepped on a rock on the trail. My foot slid and I fell, falling down a ridge into a hole in the trees, my husband thinks about 10 feet down! It happened so fast and I was fortunate to not break anything or land myself in the hospital. The trees and rocks kept me from falling too fast. I am a bit scraped up. When I was down in that "hole" and trying to figure out how to get out, I had no doubt I had the strength to pull myself out. I was too far down for my husband to reach me. He bent a small tree over the trail and down into the hole where I was. I had to pull myself out of the hole with that tree! I was able to do it and it wasn't too difficult, though now my arms are quite sore from this experience. BUT, very grateful to be fit so I could get myself out of that mess! You never know when being strong will come in handy.

Wow. A very good thing that you are so fit
Happy to hear that you are ok, and that nothing serious happened.

That's amazing! Good for you, and glad you weren't more injured!

I have two similar tales to tell, if I may:

- a couple of years ago, I was wearing heels on a polished concrete floor, took a corner too quickly, slid, and fell down hard on one leg. I swear it was my workouts and fitness level that saved me from worse injuries--I had enough balance to sort of stabilize myself during the fall, land on a large muscle instead of spraining a tiny area like a wrist or ankle, and wound up with nothing but a bruise.

- my aunt-in-law has been a fitness and activity fan most of her life--very active, in good shape, and does a lot of functional activities and golfing into her mid-70s. She suffered a bout of cancer recently that was described as dire with the potential that she wouldn't survive the summer. Well, not only is she still with us, but her tumors are diminished so much that she can stop chemo already, after only a few months. I firmly believe that her healthy habits saved her life.

ncl - Wow! So glad you are okay!!! What an amazing feat for you to be able to pull yourself out of there!

kat999 - Yes! Having a healthy starting point is what has saved me a few times from worse injuries or illnesses!

Great story and motivation to stay fit! Glad you are ok!

Years ago I got my mom to use the fitness center at her apartment complex and when she fell and broke a leg, she really benefited from having better upper body strength due to using the weight machines.
