amazing stress relievers other than fitness and meditation

what ways have you noticed stress relief in your daily activities other than exercise and meditation?

we had a mural painting session at work with a consultant last week. 9 people from work painted individual canvasses that, when arranged together, formed a larger mural. our mural will be mounted to a blank wall in the office.

i noticed an immediate release of stress while i was doing this.

piano - several years ago, i went back to taking piano lessons as an adult. i was practicing a difficult classical piece, and i noticed the tension in my neck and shoulders went away, plus some underlying "worry" in the back of my mind seemed to have disappeared.

although i meditate on my commute to work (i catch the bus) and exercise, painting and piano seemed to have provided another way to relieve stress.

come to find out, a lot of studies have shown measurable reductions in cortisol in people who paint or create art. we're always told that "stress is everywhere" or "you need to calm down" or "it's because of stress that you are _____ [fill in the blank]." i feel encouraged that there's another tool that i can use to reduce stress.

Knitting has been a good stress reliever for me over the past several years, though I don't do it consistently because it tends to aggravate the arthritis in my hand. The repetitive motion and softness of the yarn are soothing. I stick to smaller projects for the immediate gratification, too.

Definitely walking at the beach! Also reading or listening to a good book, I like audio books. And soaking in an epsom salt bath.

I picked up an old cross stitch project about a year ago and had so much fun with it that I've made it my main hobby. It's definitely helped.

My father died after a long slow decline, and it's been a real blessing to have something to focus on.

Love the pretty colors, the opportunities to personalize, the fact that I don't have to be an artistic genius, don't have to feel inspired or remember what I was doing last session.

The project I'm working on now is kind of large so it isn't portable enough to bring with me when I'm in a waiting room or something like that. Guess I need to kit up an ornament project or two, but I enjoyed the last little one I did so much that I just kept stitching til it was done.

*snort* I always have this mental struggle when I talk about coloring books for adults. The phrasing sounds so risqué.
