walking with ankle weights

Just saw an article about Jessica Alba doing her walk with ankle weights; does anyone else do this?

I agree with the belief that they are not recommended because they create too much stress on the joints.

i've used a weighted belt while walking, and that was pretty good. it's the one that came with a 10MS kit and same one Leslie uses in one of her Target kits.

A weighted vest or belt would allow for a more even distribution of weight and less risk of damaging the joints.

My shins hurt thinking about walking with ankle weights!

Walking with ankle weights can increase your risk of hip flexor strain (which often causes back pain). You may be especially vulnerable if you spend a lot of time sitting (desk work etc) as hip flexors tend to become short/tight in that scenario. I agree that a weighted vest would be a safer bet. Though even with a vest, it is best to start with lower weight and build gradually so that your legs/feet can adapt. I've seen more than a few cases of plantar fasciitis caused by aggressive use of a weighted vest. Walking is repetitive so too heavy of a weight can cause damage. Likewise, the use of lighter weight can be very effective given the repetition.

I have a co-worker who used to walk at lunch with leg weights. I recall in the 80’s it was sort of a trend and then a lot of people had injuries from it. It doesn’t seem like a safe thing to do.
