Karla, I live out in the country and if I ever need a fireman or EMT it would be a volunteer from my town that I probably know pretty well and after seeng them act like dorks in the bars, I’ve thought, “Please God, don’t ever let Jimmy come to my rescue!” We don’t have any Kurt Russells around except that most of them are chauvinistic and are really into hunting.

I can get up off the floor with no hands. I'm actually in good shape. I have good aerobic capacity and the strength to do most activities. The weak link is the back injury. I have to be very careful to avoid another vertebral fracture. (Heck, I could have had more as it never stopped hurting.)
Since that injury, I have done a lot of back and core work. I finally have a 4-pack after all these years. This is a bad time to be a senior, IMHO. We are more vulnerable to Covid. I am distracted all the time by the current situation. I live in the country's biggest virus hot spot. And, they don't have enough vaccines even for health care workers, let alone those 65 plus. I have been saddened to see that too many younger folks don't give a rat's ass if they catch the virus and give it to their elders. Seniors have never been valued in our culture and it has become worse. Instead of forgetting where I put the car keys or my glasses, I worry I won't have enough masks. I've even had nightmares where I am in a crowd and can't find my mask. The high stress levels aren't good for the brain.

Adding to VVF post many retired seniors keep active with volunteering. This keeps them busy, feeling worthwhile and mentally sharp. But there is no volunteering right now so healthy seniors are struggling to find ways to stay busy.
I work in a library and our Friends group and volunteers are chomping at the bit to be doing something again.

Very true. I've noticed the effect on my brain this past year.

ETA: The majority of our volunteering is happening virtually right now. Our Board and committees meet on Zoom, and we use email and smartphones (texts and calls) to keep in touch. My best friend and I talk, email, and/or text almost every day.
