She is Kate's friend. They met in the in the beginning of the series at a weight loss group. She has been on the show off and on. In the beginning Kate could not stand her, but they became good friends. The actress is actually the wife of the creator of the show.

Yes, that was her! She was also at the hospital when Jack was being born, but practically everyone treated her rudely. She bought the Ruth Bader Ginsberg doll that Kate wanted to have for the baby.

I recognized that I knew one of the songs they used in last night's episode, but it was too soft for me to identify it. It turns out it was "Miss Misery" by Elliot Smith. They always use wonderful music in the show. I appreciate that as a music geek.
