Not my grandmother, but I heard my sister say to my four year old boy at the time, "I loved you when you were still a twinkle in your mother's eye." Old Irish saying.

My maternal grandmother, born in 1873, had several friends and relatives who suffered from domestic abuse. She died when I was 2, so I don't remember her, but my mom says that she always used to say that if any man hit her, it would be the first and last time. "After all, he's gotta sleep sometime...."

My Great Grandmother used to say, "When you feel your worst, dress your best."

My best friend of 40 years just came down with possibly the Coronavirus.
I was feeling low this morning, so I did up my hair, put on a nice blouse, some lipstick and a few pieces of pretty jewelry. And I feel better. I will make it a practice to dress up a little during this time of sheltering in place as it does impact my psyche. Thank you Great Grandma!

I peel potatoes and the peelings are way too thick, there is a ton of potato attached.
I asked my grandmother how are your peelings so thin?
She said "don't worry, when you pay for the potatoes, your peelings will be thin too."

She said that to me lots of times.

Thank you! She has a lot of support and has been in good health. She's the caretaker, now she has to let others care for her.

Another quote, this time from my Grandma, is 'Have some fun. Life is supposed to be fun.'
Whenever I am having fun and laughing, I think of her and smile.

My grandma was quite the card. I remember as a kid going into the bathroom where she was concentrating on doing her hair. I said "if someone wants to run away, where's the farthest place they could go?" She thought for a second, her eyes never leaving the mirror, and answered "Timbuktu". I went quickly on my way. As an adult, I chuckle that she never asked for any details. There was always an unspoken assumption in my family that you would be competent, resilient and responsible for your decisions. We were dearly loved but not coddled

ETA: And thanks to my grandma, I knew that there was a place in France where they dance without their pants...and I could sing to that effect

I guess I should stay on track and provide an actual quote. She was fond of these 2 gems:

Might as well serve the devil if you are going to drink his juice.

God helps those who help themselves.

Strangely, those concepts have been helpful a few times in my life, though maybe they were not used exactly as she intended.

My grandmother was not a nice person. I never got any advice from her, because everything was about her all the time.

My advice comes from my mom.

1. A free meal is a free meal.

She did not live long enough to see Facebook, Twitter, etc, but it is timeless.

2. Never put anything in writing.

The quote I remember is what my dad said about his mom - "She can live better on less than anyone else." She could take a dollar and stretch it many ways. Plus, she was a great cook.
