I have a couple links I bookmarked recently about how to build up to doing one. It's one of my fitness goals too.

military.com's pull up info page

Melissa Bender's post about pull ups

The other day when I started trying I thought I'd be able to just jump up & do the negative pull up (like in the melissa bender link) but I ended up having to start with the assisted pull up machine at the gym. I've heard also that once you can do at least one, putting a bar in a doorway you pass a lot & doing one whenever you pass it helps you build up to more.

Katy Bowman had a blog post about building hand skin strength as a beginning prep for pull-ups:

I love that post. I've also been working on the shoulder stabilization in the hanging position that she talks about.

But really, truly - for me the most realistic preparation for pullups is to lose weight, to improve my strength to weight ratio.

You can do negative pull-ups to build up strength. I also bought SuperBands which are like Woody Bands. They are like very strong rubberbands that help you go over your bar.
