I honestly can't understand why it's priced so high.

I do find it very expensive too. For that price, I would rather spring for the full Vitamix (which I do have).

High-speed blenders are expensive though. They are very high in quality for sure and can heat up veggies/liquid in 5 minutes to make a hot soup. That's not something a regular blender can do. I don't think you can compare them to regular blenders (you can't make soup, sorbet, grind coffee beans or make grain flours in a regular blender) - they are just very different (not to say regular blenders aren't good, they just can't do the same thing as the high-speed ones).

I guess if you are always on the go and want the high-speed blender features in a "bullet" type offering, this is a nice option. The price point is probably not very different as the motor would be comparable to the regular Vitamix, and that's where the cost lies.

The motor in the new S30 seems quite a bit less powerful than in the regular machines - 790 watts, or a little more than 1 HP, vs. 2/2.2 HP for the classic/next generation.

That's what I have, but I would buy a Ninja if I were looking for something now, partly because of the lower cost and good reviews but also because my experience with the Vitamix just isn't the "end all be all" I had hoped for. There are things I like to blend, like peeled grapefruits, that wind up with lots of hard chewy pith bits unless I run the blender a full minute, which makes the smoothie very hot. That kind of thing.
