TaeBo Ultimate Lower Body

Billy Blanks

Like every TaeBo workout, this tape goes very fast and it's easy to cheat, don't cheat, watch your form, listen to Billy's form pointers and try to follow Shelli's performance - kicking in the most high and strong range you can, and you will get a great cardio workout in about 50 minutes.

If you put enough strength into the moves you will work your lower body, but this workout gives you more aerobic than toning. For target toning you have 2 tough sets of pile one fast set of squats combined with roundhouse kick and one fast set of squats combined with front kick. all the rest is pure cardio that gives a little toning - circel kicks, roundhouse kick, machine gun kicks, front kicks, knee lift, front kick and knee lift combined, a lot of back kicks and some move I can't remember the name, some of the moves are in short combination (sometimes incorporate upper body) some done alone. All in all, tough and fun workout if you love kickboxing and are willing to put an effort into watching your form and put all your strength into the moves which is the only thing that make kickboxing so intense since you don't have alot of jumping/high impact moves.

Instructor comments: nice and motivating

I am a high intermediate/low advanced exerciser. I think if you've mastered the first infomercial Tae Bo Advanced workout you'd be OK, except for two moves: lots of really fast back kicks (which I think could harm the lower back) and the kick where you draw a big circle in front of you with your foot. I do something else, and/or avoid the double time, when they're doing this move. In order to keep my heart rate in the zone, I also ignored Billy when he has the group hold a plie squat for like 4 minutes just before the cooldown. I did more roundhouse kicks instead.

I got this DVD for the lower body workout when I could not work my upper body due to a shoulder injury. I missed kickboxing and wanted to give my legs and knees a break from all the running, stepping, and lower body weight work I've been doing. The workout fit the bill--there are only a couple segments that include punches and I just rotate my torso without actually punching. I've done the workout twice now and I think it's a keeper. I'm not one for collecting lots of Tae Bo--only have this and four Tae Bo Live Advanced tapes. There's lots more Tae Bo workouts out there but I find this is all I need for kickboxing cardio variety.

As others have noted it is a "parts" workout combined from other workouts. I thought the editing was surprisingly good. Not including the warmup, the workout is about 40 minutes, all cardio, no floorwork. And it's chaptered, not in a menu but in a way that someone could program a dvd player to only play certain segments. I can't see why one would do this though. The chapters do make it easier to skip to the "cooldown" if you have less time. But I find Billy's cooldowns to be a joke and usually do something else on my own. If Billy unevenly works one side harder than the other, I didn't notice.

Instructor comments: I kind of dread doing Tae-bo (even though I love kickboxing, especially the far more pricey Powerstrike workouts), but once I get going I find Billy pretty motivating.

The Ultimate Tae Bo Tapes are a compilation of the best segments from Tae Bo TV (which aired awhile back on PPV/Satellite T.V.) the Get Ripped series, and the original mix of tapes.

The following abbreviations may appear at the beginning of a new "segment" in the review below. These abbreviations indicate which Tae Bo TV or Get Ripped tape the segments came from:

"TB TV" (followed by advanced or basic) indicates that the following segment is from a past Tae Bo T.V. workout.

"GR" (followed by advanced or basic) indicates that this segment is a clip from a Tae Bo Get Ripped video. The "GR" indication may also be followed by a color, indicating the color of the Get Ripped VCR tape box for easy identification purposes.

"AL" or "BL" indicates this clip is from an original Advanced Live tape, or Basic Live tape.

A workout number (if applicable) follows to indicate which tape number it is in the appropriate series. Tae Bo TV tapes are in sequential order of filmings, the other tapes are in order of release.

If the reviewer is not sure what tape the clip is from, he/she has indicated so.
